Home > News > April 2006 > 24-Apr-2006 SEMTA appoints new ChairSir Alan Jones of Toyota has been appointed as the new Chair of SEMTA, the Sector Skills Council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies. He takes up the role at SEMTA following the retirement of the former Chair, Lord Trefgarne. A graduate in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Sir Alan joined Toyota in 1990 and is currently Chairman of Toyota Manufacturing (UK) Ltd and Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Europe. Announcing Sir Alan's appointment, Lord Trefgarne said: "I am delighted that Sir Alan has agreed to be our new Chairman. He has direct experience in helping to establish one of the most productive and competitive companies in Europe through the development of a world-class workforce. His experience will be invaluable to us." Sir Alan said: "Our contribution to the economic success of UK plc must be to ensure that skill development meets the needs of employers now and in the future. We must challenge to clarify, simplify and encourage skills and professional development that makes the UK unbeatable in science, engineering and technology."
