Home > News > November 2006 > 08 November 2006 City & Guilds appoints new chairmanMichael Howell, former chief executive of Transport Initiatives Edinburgh has been elected as the new chairman of City & Guilds. Howell has been a member of City & Guilds Council since 2001, having served until this new appointment as treasurer and trustee. Welcoming his election, Chris Humphries, director-general of City & Guilds, said: "Michael brings a wealth of commercial experience and skills and will be an outstanding ambassador for City & Guilds. "This is an exciting time for the Group as we embark on our next five year plan which runs until 2011. With Michael at the helm, I am confident that City & Guilds will capitalise on every opportunity to showcase globally its vocational mastery and excellence right through until WorldSkills 2011 in London." Michael Howell said: "City & Guilds is not only a household name but also a very successful and growing business. I am proud to be associated with it at this exciting stage of its development. "There is enormous interest in the improvement of vocational skills, not just in the UK but worldwide. As an engineer, I am wholly convinced of the need for continual development of technical and vocational skills in the UK workforce." Paying tribute to the organisation's outgoing chairman David Young, Chris Humphries said: "David has been an outstanding chairman for the past seven years. I would like to thank him for providing a sound strategic direction for City & Guilds, wish him well in his other professional activities and am delighted that he will remain on the Institute's Council."
