Short-list announced for national STAR Awards

Alan Titchmarsh

Nominees for 'Work-Based Learning Trainer of the Year' and 'E-Learning Worker of the Year' are among the 130 people who have been short-listed for a national STAR Award.

The STAR Awards scheme recognises the achievements of those working in the Learning and Skills sector and was developed by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and its partners.

Kim Wilde

The commitment to develop an award scheme for teachers, trainers, managers and support staff in the Learning and Skills sector was made in the DfES publication, Success for All, published in November 2002.

The STAR Awards were launched in November 2003 by Charles Clarke, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, and have been endorsed by Stephen Fry, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Alan Titchmarsh (above top) and Kim Wilde (above bottom).

The 130 nominees, who have a variety of job roles from workplace trainers, evening class tutors and college lecturers to receptionists, caretakers and technicians, were selected by the STAR judging panel from over 1,600 nominations.

The nominations were received from learners, colleagues and managers who were all impressed by individuals working in learning providers as varied as adult education institutions, sixth-form colleges, community providers and workplaces across England.

The short-listed nominees were chosen because they have made a difference to those around them with their willingness to go beyond the call of duty to enrich the experience of learners. They have all been invited to attend the star-studded Awards Ceremony at the Brewery in London on 12 October 2004 hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter, Dermot Murnaghan.

Thirteen prize category winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony and each will receive a £1,000 cash prize, a trophy and a certificate. In addition, their employer will receive a framed certificate, which shows that they employ a STAR.

The thirteen STAR Award categories are:
