In a statement supporting the STAR Awards Alan Titchmarsh (above) said: "I can honestly say that without the various apprenticeship qualifications I gained in the Learning and Skills sector, my job would not be nearly so satisfying. "On leaving school I became an apprentice gardener in the local nursery, then continued my training at horticultural college and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. There are many tutors and staff members whose support and advice helped me along, and that is why I am supporting the STAR Awards. "I would encourage all learners and colleagues alike to recognise and publicly celebrate the achievements of unsung heroes in their place of learning by nominating them for a STAR Award" Back to news: Short-list announced for national STAR Awards
