The winners were selected from more than 1,600 nominations made by learners, colleagues, managers and the public from all over the country. They were presented with the top prize of £1,000, a trophy and a certificate at the STAR Awards Ceremony held last week in London. Their employers also received a framed certificate recognising that they employ a STAR Award winner. The STAR Awards scheme was developed by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and its partners to recognise the achievements of those working in the Learning and Skills sector. They were launched in November 2003 by Charles Clarke, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, and have been endorsed by Stephen Fry, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Alan Titchmarsh and Kim Wilde. All of the winners come from workplaces such as further education and sixth form colleges, community-based providers, prisons, work-based learning and employers, adult education services and UK online centres. The STAR Awards Judging Panel chose winners who they felt had made a difference to the lives of learners with their willingness to exceed expectations and enrich the learning experience.
