The programme is designed to promote diversity among the Revenue's workforce - breaking down the barriers that have traditionally prevented under-represented groups reaching more senior levels in the organisation. Ten Breakthrough programmes have been run in eight locations, involving 346 staff. The programme is open to all but targeted to encourage people from under-represented groups to participate. The programme, which lasts for 12 months, starts with a two-day seminar which covers goals, motivation, mental programming and overcoming barriers. Mentoring is a key part of the programme, and participants attend a mentoring workshop, to help them understand the nature of the relationship. They meet regularly with their mentors over the 12 months. "Career tracking results from participants show significantly better promotion rates compared with their matched peers," said Human Resources Advisor, Mary Callaghan. "Some have achieved more than one promotion since their involvement with the Breakthrough programme and many attribute their success directly to their participation".
