Driving to Success project wins National Training Award

Skills for Logistics, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the freight logistics industries, and Nortec Training, have won a South East Region National Training Award for the Driving to Success project. The programme, aimed at providing the unemployed with a route to become a truck driver, has enabled almost 1,000 people to return to or find work in the logistics industry.

Driving to Success helps unemployed people to obtain an LGV licence by providing registered candidates with free training, worth at least £3,000. In addition, candidates are trained in customer services, literacy and numeracy skills and obtain a knowledge of the logistics industry.

"As a result of the programme there are now an additional 1,000 fully qualified LGV drivers to help reduce the existing driver shortage in the UK," said Ian Hetherington, Chief Executive, Skills for Logistics. "Driving to Success creates proficient, committed and fully competent drivers."

Maxine Bennett, Operations Director at Nortec Training said: "The Driving to Success programme allows people who are seeking to work to train for a specific profession with a clear route into the freight transport industry. We are delighted that the achievements of this programme have been recognised at a national level."

The National Training Awards are run by UK Skills on behalf of the DfES.
