The organisers of the Apprenticeship Awards, the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), are looking for entries from young people that demonstrate commitment to their own personal development and progression alongside examples of their outstanding achievements and a real contribution to their workplace. "Just like competitive sport at the highest level, Apprenticeships require dedication, training and commitment from the young people and employers who undertake and offer them," said Sir Matthew Pinsent. "These are the people contributing directly to the international standing of England and those using Apprenticeships to excel in their field deserve the recognition that the Apprenticeship Awards will give them." Garry Herbert added: "The importance of the Apprenticeship Awards is acknowledging the employers and young people who have firmly grasped the opportunities that Apprenticeships offer. For employers it is the opportunity to improve their business’s performance through skills and knowledge, and for young people it is the opportunity to create a successful and fulfilling career. We look forward to being part of this important event." The awards, which were held by the LSC for the first time last year, are designed to recognise the hard work and commitment of young people currently on, or who have completed an Apprenticeship. Categories for this years awards are: The Apprentice Award: in two categories, Apprentice of the Year and Advanced Apprentice of the Year, awarded to apprentices whose contribution in the workplace has exceeded expectations The Personal Achiever of the Year Award: in two categories, 16-18-year-olds and 19-24-year-olds, to recognise young people who have successfully overcome barriers to succeed in the workplace The Employer Award: for small, medium and large employers, who have shown commitment to Apprenticeships and supported their employees during their training. An additional category has been added for the micro business with 2 to 9 employees. The 2005 Apprenticeship Awards are being sponsored by City & Guilds, British Gas, BT and Skills for Business. "The Awards are a great opportunity to recognise the outstanding contribution that young people and employers have made through Apprenticeships," said Stephen Gardner, Director of Work Based Learning at the LSC. "Apprenticeships provide young people with a mixture of on and off-the-job training while they are being paid and the young people involved have proved to make a real difference to businesses. This is our opportunity to applaud their performance and their commitment."
