The title, which was awarded in the Central and Local Government category, was given at a ceremony held at London’s Park Lane Hotel in Piccadilly. The judging panel used three main criteria during the selection of the shortlist:
The judges commented, "The Adult Learning Inspectorate demonstrated a passion about investing in people development that is normally only found in a mature organisation. It is relatively easy to achieve this in a large organisation, but not in a small organisation such as this. The organisation has achieved some remarkably innovative things." The ALI was short-listed with two other finalists – the Land Registry (Information Systems) and the Department for International Development Andy Brimble, head of ICT at the Adult Learning Inspectorate said, "Winners in other categories included BP, ASDA, Barclays and Procter and Gamble – I think we are in very good company indeed! "The ALI, which employs 270 staff at its Coventry-based offices, is a forward looking and progressive organisation which demonstrably makes a big difference to learners’ lives. "In the ICT team, we actively promote individual development by providing specialist training in addition to the generous opportunities for learning and development provided for all ALI staff. We also actively seek to address work life balance issues generously and proactively." David Sherlock, Chief Inspector of Adult Learning said, "I am delighted that the ALI has been recognised as ultimately one of the best places to work in the country. The ICT team deserves a pat on the back not only for its total commitment to the department but for sharing their expertise which has, and continues to, benefit everyone at the ALI." The ALI is a government body responsible for raising the standards of education and training for young people and adults in England by inspecting and reporting on the quality of learning provision they receive.
