2006 National Training Awards open for entries

UK Skills are inviting organisations to enter the 2006 National Training Awards.

The annual awards were set up twenty years ago to recognise and celebrate the people and the organisations which create success through training and personal development.

Last year's winners included GNER for a staff development programme and Liverpool's Marriott Hotels/New Heys Business and Enterprise Specialist College for a recruitment strategy to recruit high-quality job-ready associates. Entries for this year's awards close on 28 April 2006.

UK Skills, who run the National Training Awards on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills, provides support to entrants including telephone mentoring and half-day workshops which are held throughout the UK between February and April.

Dr Graeme Hall, UK Skills chief executive, says the entry process provides entrants with a valuable benchmarking tool.

"Every year winners tell us how much they have gained from the process of entering the awards. They appreciate the free support and business mentoring they receive from our consultants while completing their application allows them to evaluate what lasting impact their training has had," says Dr Hall.

"We've even had people who have missed out on awards in previous years tell us how much they've benefited from the process - and how they can't wait to put in a new application for the next awards!

"Those who do win awards receive public recognition for the success they've achieved. Their investment in training benefits us all - by raising people's skill levels, individuals and organisations can better meet their potential and that has flow-on effects which benefit communities and the UK economy as a whole."

UK Skills says anyone and any organisation can enter the National Training Awards. Previous entrants have included charities, individuals, multi-national companies, volunteers and the self-employed.

The finalists for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the nine English regions are announced in August 2006. They will be invited to an awards ceremony in their region or nation. All National Training Award winners are then invited to attend a UK gala award ceremony in London in December.
