LSC announces finalists of 2006 Apprenticeship Awards

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has announced the finalists for this year's national Apprenticeship Awards.

The LSC says the Awards are designed to recognise employers who are successfully using Apprenticeships to improve business performance, as well as the hard work and commitment of young people currently on, or who have recently completed, an Apprenticeship.

This year's Awards, the third to be held by the LSC, have attracted a record 1,113 entries from employers and apprentices.

Amongst the employer finalists are British Gas, Land Rover, Chesterfield Borough Council and Beere Electrical Services - a runner up in last years Awards.

All finalists have been invited to attend the Awards ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane in London on Thursday 15th June where TV stars Natasha Kaplinsky and Richard Hammond will present the awards to employers and apprentices.

The LSC says employers were judged on a number of criteria including implementation of programme, demonstration of the way Apprenticeships had benefited their businesses, and the level of support provided to the young apprentices within their organisation.

Stephen Gardner, director of apprenticeships at the Learning and Skills Council, himself a former engineering apprentice, said: "It's timely that we should be making this announcement today, as thousands of young people sit their GCSE and A Level exams. Many of these will choose an Apprenticeship after their exams.

"These young people are the future of UK business and increasingly employers are choosing to recruit them through Apprenticeships. These Awards, which recognise the achievements of young people and employers, show why.

"The Apprenticeship Awards provide real evidence of how young people can train for a lucrative career and how employers can improve productivity and competitiveness."
