Winners of water industry skills awards announced

The winners of the Business Skills Awards for the water industry were announced at the recent annual Institution of Water Officers President's dinner.

The awards were presented by Tim Balcon, chief executive of Energy & Utility Skills (EU Skills), the Sector Skills Council for the electricity, gas, waste management and water industries.

The EU Skills Business Skills Awards are designed recognise initiatives which have significantly contributed to an improvement in business skills.

The EU Skills Business Skills Award 2006, sponsored by Develop, was shared by construction company Clancy DOCWRA and Alfred McAlpine Infrastructure Services Limited/Scottish Water Solutions. South West Water was runner up.

Clancy DOCWRA earned its award for a programme of supervisor development in partnership with Uxbridge College. EU Skills report that this has resulted in 90% of learners gaining formal certification, achieving a return of £300,000 from an £80,000 investment in the initiative.

McAlpine Infrastructure Services Limited/Scottish Water Solutions won its award for a programme designed to meet the varying training needs of 1700 employees across Scotland.

South West Water achieved its runner-up business skills award for its 'WorkOut' initiative. Working alongside Corven

Consulting, the company trained supervisors, team leaders and managers to roll out this continuous improvement programme through a series of three-day workshops.
