Apprentice winner to present at awards ceremony

Michelle Dewberry, winner of the popular BBC reality show The Apprentice, is among the line-up of speakers taking the stage at the first ever Passenger Transport Apprenticeship Awards Ceremony which is to take place in London on 26 October 2006.

Speaking prior to the awards, Michelle Dewberry, said: "I am really pleased to have been invited to present the Go for Excellence awards as I firmly believe in the value of workplace training and gathering skills that can lead on to further success. Employers who invest in their staff are leading the way in this sector. They are playing the long game and deserve recognition as much as the finalists.

"Millions of people rely on passenger transport. Ultimately it's the quality of the people working in the industries and the quality of their training that ensures customer satisfaction and increased bottom line results."

Hosted by GoSkills, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for passenger transport, the ceremony will also feature contributions from Lord Hogg, chairman of the Independent Bus Appeals Body, and Phil Hope, skills minister. Chairing the event is Stephen Telling, chairman and chief executive of Coach and Bus operator Tellings Golden Miller, and acting chair of GoSkills.

The awards ceremony marks the culmination of the GoSkills scheme, Go for Excellence, which recognises outstanding performance by apprentices in each of the following apprenticeship frameworks: Aviation, Rail Operations, Rail Engineering, Road Passenger Transport, and Transport Engineering and Maintenance.

Peter Huntington, GoSkills' Chief Executive said: "We are delighted with the line-up of guest speakers for the evening and particularly pleased that the winner of 'The Apprentice' has agreed to present the prizes to our winners and finalists.

"The scheme was developed in partnership with employers in the sector and provides a real opportunity to recognise and share good practice. We are pleased to have such a strong level of commitment to the awards."
