Awards launched to find learndirect achievers

learndirect has launched a new awards scheme - the learndirect Achievement Awards.

Launching the Awards, minister for skills Phil Hope said: "The learndirect Achievement Awards are a celebration of learning, recognising the achievements of people learning with learndirect, businesses training with learndirect, and the centres supporting them."

Ex-England rugby international and Strictly Come Dancing star, Matt Dawson, has pledged his support to the learndirect Achievement Awards. He said: "Since retiring from rugby this year, I've had the opportunity to develop new skills and it's been a life-changing experience for me.

"I'm supporting the awards because I know how important it is to have the right skills to do the job, both on and off the pitch. The people, businesses and learning centres recognised by the awards will be those who have gone the extra mile to develop skills. By working to improve themselves they are contributing to the success of the country.

"I'd encourage everyone to make a nomination for the Awards, it's easy to do at www.learndirect.co.uk/awards"

According to figures released by learndirect to coincide with the launch, nearly one in five young adults in England are missing out on promotions, pay rises and opportunities at work because they lack the right skills. 20% of 18 - 34 year olds felt a lack of skills in English, maths, IT and management was holding them back in the workplace and preventing them making the most of career opportunities.

Adults further into their careers who took part in the learndirect survey also felt a lack of skills was holding them back. Over one in ten 35 - 54 year olds said they needed to improve their skills for work, and one in twenty 55 - 64 year olds felt the same.

Nominations for the learndirect Achievement Awards close on 16 March 2007. The regional finalists will be announced in June 2007 and invited to a national final in October 2007.
