Geoff Armstrong, CIPD director general said: "The need for good people management and development has never been more important. Continuous learning, new skills and active engagement of everyone in the enterprise are key to success. "The People Management award celebrates the creative initiatives employers are taking to improve performance and achieve business objectives. "This year, two new categories have been introduced - Talent management for business benefit and Turning HR policies into practice: the vital role of line managers." The CIPD has announced the following four award categories and descriptions: * Business impact through learning and development has been introduced to reflect the crucial role learning and development plays in addressing skills shortages, retaining and developing employees, supporting organisational change and helping employers achieve business objectives. * Improving business performance through engaging staff recognises the need for organisations to invest the resources required to engage their workforce. CIPD's research investigating employee attitudes shows that engaged employees perform better, are more likely to recommend their organisation to others and are less likely to quit. * Talent management for business benefit has been introduced to recognise the impact it can have on productivity. The CIPD's 2006 Learning, Training and Development Survey finds 94% of organisations believe that well designed talent management activities have a positive impact their bottom line. * Turning HR policies into practice: the vital role of line managers reflects the crucial role line managers play at the delivery end of people management. The way in which they interpret and use the policies and practices designed by HR professionals has become an important determinant of the success or failure of those practices. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held at the CIPD's Annual Conference and Exhibition in Harrogate on 19 September 2007. A specially commissioned sculpture by Robert Erskine will be presented to the overall winner. The closing date for entries is 30 March 2007.
