Edge Awards 2007 launched

Educational foundation Edge has launched the Edge Awards 2007. The awards are designed to recognise and reward employers that offer practical learning opportunities for young people. These include work-experience placements, apprenticeships and other ways of organisations engaging with education, as well as individuals who have achieved significant progress through on-the-job training.

Edge says over £300,000 of prize money will be distributed among regional and national winners, who must demonstrate how they intend to use the money to provide learning opportunities for young people.

Andy Powell, Edge's chief executive, said: "Over the last two years, the Edge Awards have made a tremendous difference to the working lives and potential of many employers and employees. The extra finance provided through the scheme makes a very real difference to companies who are prepared to invest in training and education for young people.

"Last year's winners used their awards to fund projects such as the opening of a customised training school for catering staff, enabling apprentice staff to undertake HNC college courses and providing a range of programmes for young people to find out about the world of work."

A panel of judges will assess applications in the three categories - Edge small business award, Edge business award and Practical learner award.

Three organisations and practical learners will be rewarded regionally and will then be entered for the National Awards, held on 22nd November at the Camden Roundhouse.
