unionlearn launches Quality Award programme

The first recipients of unionlearn's new Quality Award scheme were presented with their awards yesterday by secretary of state for education and skills, Alan Johnson MP.

The Quality Award scheme is aimed at providers in the learning world who are committed to working with trade unions. unionlearn, the organisation developed by the TUC to help unions meet the education and skills needs of their members, says providers need to demonstrate that unions and union learners are considered in the design, development and delivery of courses and programmes.

Nine colleges received a Quality Award yesterday, they were:

  • Northern College, Barnsley
  • College of North East London, Tottenham
  • Long Benton Community College, Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Riverside College (Halton) and Warrington Collegiate Partnership
  • Yeovil College Training
  • Wirral Metropolitan College, Birkenhead
  • New College Trade Union Learndirect Centre, Swindon
  • Stoke-on Trent College
  • Tresham Institute of Further and Higher Education, Kettering

Yeovil College Training received its award for the provision in Skills for Life, IT and NVQs. Shaun Hindle, director of business training at Yeovil College said: "The assessment allowed us to identify our strengths as a training provider and review the success of our bespoke training packages for union members and companies. This prestigious award is a mark of true success, and a measure of what we can develop further for the future."

The College of North East London's award was made its Learning on the Move partnership project, which provides courses through unionlearn with the Southern and Eastern Region and Unite (TGWU section) for bus company Metroline in North London.

Phil Gowan, director of vocational skills at the College of North East London (CoNEL), said: "CoNEL is delighted to receive the Quality Award. It is a beacon for employers and unions to our quality programmes, and recognises the success that partnership working with ULRs and managers can achieve in bringing educational opportunities to Metroline's London workforce."
