Less than two weeks left to nominate your STAR

Nominations for this year's STAR Awards must be submitted by 12 June.

The Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) holds the annual STAR Awards with the aim of recognising and rewarding the unsung heroes of the further education sector.

With 10 categories, the STAR Awards cover many aspects of FE provision and are open to those in teaching and non-teaching roles. Both learners and staff can make nominations for individuals or teams.

The 2009 LSIS STAR Award categories are:

  • Teaching, training and learning practitioner - nominated by peers (sponsored by IfL)
  • Teaching, training and learning practitioner - nominated by learners (sponsored by IfL)
  • Skills for Life
  • Response to learners' needs (sponsored by NIACE)
  • Engaging employers (sponsored by 157Group)
  • Workforce development
  • Support role (sponsored by Unison)
  • Learning support
  • Leadership
  • Innovation (sponsored by Becta)
  • Lifetime achievement (sponsored by DIUS)

As well as a trophy and certificate, winners will receive a cheque for £500 plus up to £1,500 from the STARlight fund for personal and/or professional development. Highly commended nominees also receive STARlight funding.

LSIS says that over 11,500 people have been recognised since the launch of the awards in 2003, and more than £150,000 in development funding and prize money has been given to winners and highly commended nominees.
