Now in their second year, the awards were created to recognise and reward colleges and training providers that use technology in outstanding ways that benefit learners. There are seven categories available for colleges and training providers to enter, with winners receiving a cash prize to spend on technology equipment, provision, or training. The categories are:
An eighth 'Furthering my Learning' award is designed to enable learners to nominate individual tutors or organisations that are using technology to make a positive difference to the way they learn. Minister Kevin Brennan said: "As patron for 2010 I'm delighted to launch Becta's Next Generation Learning Awards for the FE and skills sector. "Our Digital Britain Strategy has highlighted the potential of technology today to improve every aspect of our lives. It's important that we capitalise on this to improve the learning that people do, whether formal or informal, work-related or for leisure. "Many of the people who work in the FE sector use technology creatively, and all the research shows that this has a big impact on students' results and on business competitiveness. This commitment and expertise deserves to be celebrated and rewarded, but the Awards are about more than that. Last year's winners are generously sharing their knowledge and experience with their peers, and I'm sure the 2010 winners will do the same." Jane Williams, Becta's executive director for further education, skills and regeneration, said: "We were delighted with the success of the first ever 'Next Generation Learning Awards' earlier this year. The event highlighted and rewarded organisations in the UK who use technology in outstanding and innovative ways and to benefit learners. "We look forward to seeing more exciting examples of technology in action and would encourage organisations to enter and showcase the great work they have been doing." The closing date for award entries is 19 October 2009. The Next Generation Learning awards will take place on 8 March 2010 in Birmingham.
