Leadership Trust launches on-line leadership assessment tool

The Leadership Trust has launched a new on-line 360 degree assessment tool, The Leadership Audit.

Focusing specifically on leadership and the leadership behaviours, strengths and development needs of individual managers and potential managers, the tool has several possible applications.

According to the Leadership Trust, the tool can be used:

  • to provide an overall picture of an organisation’s current collective leadership behaviour, strengths and development needs
  • to provide a “snapshot” of individuals’ current leadership behaviour, strengths and development needs
  • to provide a basis for the evaluation of leadership development programmes, whereby “before” and “after” measurements are taken
  • as a research tool, for example to investigate factors that may influence leadership behaviour and effectiveness in organisations or to compare organisations either generally or in the same industry (ie for benchmarking purposes)

Questionnaires are completed on-line and feedback provided via an electronic file. Over 70 items are covered within The Leadership Audit, grouped into clusters of leadership characteristics and behaviours. These include vision and mission, emotional intelligence, coaching and mentoring, problem solving and decision making, and communication, as well as leadership effectiveness and subordinates’ satisfaction with leadership.

Respondents make ratings on the basis of the extent to which each item applies to them or the person they are rating, using a five-point rating scale, plus options for “I don’t know” and “Not applicable”.

Individual profiles, team profiles or an organisational profile (or all sets of profiles) are provided, and they are explained and interpreted in terms of their meaning and implications for leadership development.

Norm data is available to enable comparisons to be made between an individual’s responses and the norm group (a relevant population of individuals who have previously completed the questionnaire). The Trust says rating data is treated in strict confidence by the staff of The Leadership Trust Foundation’s Research Centre for Leadership Studies.

The new tool has been developed by a team of Leadership Trust staff, led by Professor Roger Gill.

Professor Gill says: "The Leadership Audit is a tool based on current leadership theory and best practice that enables the most accurate, fair and comprehensive assessment of leadership to be carried out, whether for individual, team or organisation development or for evaluation purposes."
