Free event highlights ‘OD’ approaches to leadership

Two graduates from Roffey Park’s MSc in People and Organisational Development (OD) will present their key research and dissertation findings on the theme of leadership at a free open event at Roffey Park in West Sussex, on 14 October 2004.

Claire Semple, OD Director of a change programme at Diageo and part of the company’s global organisation effectiveness team, will highlight the importance of authentic leadership. She will define the term, present a behavioural model and lead a discussion around the development interventions that can foster good practice.

Stefan Cantore, a Programme Director for Workforce Development working across the primary, community and secondary healthcare organisations in Brighton and Hove, will highlight the value of a conversational approach to leadership and how organisational development practitioners can utilise conversations to enhance learning and managerial effectiveness in the workplace.

"Leaders increasingly need to deal with change, improve their organisation’s capacity and establish new ways of thinking," said Diane Moody, Director of Roffey Park’s MSc, who will outline the format of the programme on the day. "Our MSc is a comprehensive programme which helps leaders to reach their potential and unlock the business performance of others in their organisation."

Launched in 1991, Roffey Park’s MSc in People and Organisational Development is delivered using a process called Self Managed Learning, which enables the participants to tailor their learning to their own - and their organisation’s - needs. It is primarily aimed at senior HR and OD practitioners but it is increasingly attracting senior managers from other functions including finance, production, operations and IT.

"The programme covers the latest thinking in the field of organisational development and participants choose which areas they want to concentrate on," said Diane Moody. "As well as learning about organisations and how to maximise the performance of people, they also learn a great deal about themselves and this helps them to become much more effective in their role."

The participants work in small groups, called Learning Sets, which meet monthly, and they assess themselves and their peers. There are no formal examinations. Residentials are held at Roffey Park and these provide the opportunity for group work, discussion, presentations and practical activities.

Potential applicants for the MSc programme will have an opportunity, after the open event, to take part in the programme assessment process which involves an interview and a group discussion exercise. The process also involves a critical analysis of Self Managed Learning, which they can submit at a later stage.

‘The MSc Open Event’ is a free session and will run from 10.00am to 12.30pm, with a buffet lunch.
