The change is the result of input from project management professionals who said that the certification has application beyond the field of information technology. The recommendations to change the name were made following the major upgrade of the certification late last year. "We believe the upgraded content provides value to a much wider audience of organisations and individuals than those focused solely on IT projects and the name should reflect that," said Lisa-Ann Barnes, president, IreeTec, Inc. and chair of the CompTIA Project+ advisory committee. "Individuals managing any type of project for their company whether or not it has an IT component to it can benefit enormously from using the certification as a means of validating project management competency." CompTIA introduced the certification as CompTIA IT Project+ in 2001 after purchasing it from the Gartner Group. In 2003, more than 200 subject-matter experts were involved with the certifications upgrade. "The subject-matter experts believe the upgraded certification will be a more accurate predictor of an individuals performance as a project manager," said John Aaron, president, Milestone, Planning and Research, Inc., and chair, subject-matter expert committee. "Organisations that train individuals to the CompTIA Project+ standard and then validate competency through the certification process will help to ensure that projects are completed successfully." The certification exam tests for traditional project management expertise, as well as the problem solving and communications skills required by project managers involved in such varied projects as business process improvement, marketing, product development, software development/engineering, ERP, IT, and more. "CompTIA is dedicated to organisational development through training and certification of skills," said Gene Salois, vice-president, CompTIA Certification. "We believe that launching the certification under this new name is going to stimulate interest in CompTIA Project+ and give a broad spectrum of organisations an innovative means of helping to ensure well-run projects with higher overall results."
