Open evening aims to introduce employees to the benefits of psychology in the workplace

An understanding of psychology not only enhances workplace management but also dramatically improves an individual’s people skills portfolio, according to academic, writer and broadcaster Professor Adrian Furnham.

Psychological principles can make a tangible impact upon individual, team and company performance, according to Furnham. He will be developing these thoughts at an open evening for prospective students of the Certificate in the Psychology of Management, on 29 September.

The Certificate in the Psychology of Management has been developed by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in collaboration with Heriot-Watt University.

Mike Emmott, CIPD Employee Relations adviser, says, “Doing a good job of managing people is one of the major factors that differentiates successful companies. By making use of tested principles drawing on psychological research, managers will be better able to size up workplace issues and develop effective and enduring solutions.”

The Certificate in the Psychology of Management aims to provide practical advice on how to harness psychology to help develop good people management practices. Course modules look at all aspects of management, from organisational culture to the psychology of decision making.

The open evening will allow interested managers to talk to tutors and past students and discover how the programme can be applied to some of the workplace’s most challenging situations. The evening will also allow prospective students to bring their line managers with them so that they gain a more thorough understanding of what the course attendee will learn.
