Roffey Park helps deliver leadership programme at C&G

One of the UK’s largest mortgage lenders, Cheltenham & Gloucester, is running an ‘inspirational leadership’ programme for around 40 senior managers.

Co-designed and co-delivered by executive education provider Roffey Park, C&G report that the programme has helped to improve business performance and brought together senior managers from different parts of the organisation.

"We wanted to transform our senior managers from being leaders in a hierarchical sense into being leaders who inspire other people in the organisation," said David Lyon, C&G’s Director of HR. "We liked Roffey Park’s approach. They have considerable expertise in leadership development and they were in-tune with what we wanted to achieve."

Roffey Park worked closely with Debbie White, Senior Manger HR, and her team to shape the development content and format. The resultant programme - called The Inspirational Leadership Programme - features six ‘forums’, which run over a 12-month period.

Each forum lasts one or two days. The first five forums cover leadership, driving improvement, winning commitment, getting results and enhancing team effectiveness. The final forum is a presentation by the participants on the results of a workplace assignment, undertaken as part of the learning.

Co-delivered by C&G and Roffey Park, the programme is running seven times this year.

"The programme gives the participants the time and space to look inwards at themselves and to analyse different leadership styles and techniques," said Lyon. "It encourages them to try new ideas and it generates enthusiasm and energy within the business."

He adds that "considerable spin-off benefits" have resulted from having managers from different parts of the organisation working together in small groups.

"Our senior managers work in separate offices and departments, so they rarely get the chance to meet," he said. "This programme brings them together. We’re now thinking how we can employ some of these techniques further down the organisation. Our market is very competitive and we’re trying to become smarter in the way we do things. That’s what this programme is about. We’ve done it to improve the leadership of the organisation and the way the business is managed."
