Managers at Legal & General achieve charter success

Two managers at Legal & General have been awarded 'Chartered Manager' status by the Chartered Management Institute.

Following the award to John Baker, training and development director, and his colleague Gary Burchett, a commercial director, Legal & General have decided to adopt the Chartered Manager scheme as one of the options in their management development programme.

"Chartered Manager provides a benchmark for colleagues to aspire to and helps drive individuals towards achieving organisational objectives," said Baker. "It also ensures individual managers will maintain their professional development as, to retain the status, they have to provide evidence regularly of the relevance of their management skills in today’s business environment."

To achieve their award, Gary and John had to demonstrate how they had made a measurable difference to Legal & General’s performance. They also had to invite 360-degree appraisals from colleagues to gain honest feedback from peers and external partners. The final stage involved an interview for both managers, which enabled them to present their evidence to a panel of assessors.

Both Gary and John will have to undertake a 3-yearly review to retain their new status. It will involve submission of fresh evidence to demonstrate that their skills remain current.

Legal and General’s managers who participate in the scheme will have access to a range of support services including an online support team, guidance workshops, and a large management information resource. The Chartered Manager award will be available as an independent and complementary scheme to Legal & General's own management development programme.
