Elaine O'Donnell, Strategic Communications Development Manager at the Agency, which employs 11 thousand people throughout England and Wales, said the staff provided the impetus for the move. "Our research revealed a real desire to provide the answers that people want as quickly and concisely as possible. Employees wanted to turn paperwork around more efficiently and to provide clear information to help people make environmental improvements." Emphasis won the contract to provide the training through competitive tender. O'Donnell says that people from across the organisation have clearly benefited in the first few months of the programme, and that its policy team have found it particularly useful in quickly disseminating legal and regulatory information. "From the outset, Emphasis carefully listened to and fully understood our training needs," she said. "Their tailored writing courses are helping us to improve the text we provide. As a result, our written communications are becoming clearer and more accessible." Topics covered on the Emphasis training programme include how to make technical subjects more accessible without ‘dumbing down’, and writing to get results. Robert Ashton, Senior Consultant at Emphasis, said. "The feedback from The Environment Agency indicates that employees are really benefiting from the training. We look forward to continuing to help the Agency in their ongoing commitment to serving their customers."
