OU launches foundation degree in health and social care

The Open University (OU) has launched a foundation degree in health and social care. The foundation degree was developed with UNISON, University College Northampton, the College of Occupational Therapists and York’s St John College with advice from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.

The OU expects students to be support workers or assistants to professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, who are themselves seeking a recognised qualification. The foundation degree is a qualification in its own right and students can also choose to top up to a BA or BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care.

OU Pro Vice Chancellor (Curriculum and Awards) Professor Linda Jones said, "We have developed our curriculum around work related and work-based learning in direct response to employers needs. Employability is becoming increasingly important and how skills relate to jobs is very important for students and for employers."
