'Facilitating the learner' is aimed at staff who have progressed quickly through the NVQ programme and want to carry on learning without moving away from hands-on work into management. The course is designed to help employees to understand their own performance and develop confidence and communication skills, in turn preparing them to support new learners and other colleagues. It involves four, two-hour training sessions, which are put into practice at work over the following four weeks, followed by a final professional assessment. Six staff from Hopscotch Day Nursery in Hayle and five from Gooseberry Bush Day Nursery in Camborne received certificates from Richard Williams, the head of Cornwall’s Families Service, and Tony Reynolds, skills development manager for the Learning Skills Council, in recognition of successfully finishing the 8-week pilot programme. The certificates were presented last week at Cornwall Enterprise Skills Development’s training centre at South Wheal Crofty, Pool. Richard Williams said: "This group can be rightly proud of their achievements, and I applaud their eagerness to keep learning. I hope many other employees throughout the County will follow their example, and take advantage of this excellent new course." Tony Reynolds agreed: "This course is a great idea – not just for nursery staff, but for anyone who wants to develop new skills at work, and support their colleagues. I congratulate the group, and I’m sure they’ll be the first of many. It is also a fine example of employers in the same sector sharing best practice and investing in the future of their workforces." Cornwall Enterprise Skills Development, a new division of Cornwall Enterprise, would like to hear from any other companies interested in the 'Facilitating the Learner' course. The organisation says the course applies to all kinds of business, can be taught at work, and is based on reflective feedback and application rather than lengthy written work.
