Michael Buerk speaks at WOLCE on health and safety

Michael Buerk

BBC news presenter Michael Buerk (right) makes an appearance at this year's World of Learning Conference and Exhibition (WOLCE) to raise awareness among visitors of the importance of maintaining a healthy and safe workplace.

Mr Buerk, who hosts 'Health & Safety - Safety at Work', an online learning resource produced by BBC Worldwide Learning, will stress not only organisations' moral and legal duties relating to health and safety for their employees but also that accidents cost British firms up to ten per cent of their profits annually.

BBC Worldwide Learning's 'Health & Safety - Safety at Work', which is available on CD-ROM as well as online, is approved by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and those who successfully complete the interactive exercises within the programme can be assessed for IOSH's 'Safety at Work' certificate.

In eight modules - covering fire, office safety, display screen equipment, lifting and carrying, hazardous substances, driving, other risks and security - the programme provides users with information and techniques that aim to ensure that workplace life continues safely.

"From employers' point of view, this resource offers a convenient and - at some £30 per user - affordable solution to maintaining health and safety standards in their organisation," commented BBC Worldwide's Director of Adult Learning, Jonathan Drake.

"Users have all the advantages of online learning - its accessibility, flexibility and availability - combined with the BBC's high production values, illustrated by the inclusion of dramatic footage from BBC television in the programme."
