Acas offer free online learning to help handle redundancy

Acas has developed a free online learning package to help businesses and organisations manage redundancies in the workplace.

Acas say that where redundancies are unavoidable, decisions should be made in a fair and consistent manner. Building on 30 years' experience of dealing with employment relations problems, the new Acas course aims to offer employers brief, straightforward advice designed to help prevent problems and deal with those that do arise.

The course covers a range of topics including:

  • Redundancy - where do I begin?
  • Statutory consultation requirements
  • Undertaking individual consultation
  • The employer's obligations to employees facing redundancy
  • Statutory and voluntary information requirements

The course also gives a definition of redundancy and looks at how important consultation and communication is to the redundancy process. Users can revisit the website at any time for practical advice and information when dealing with redundancies.

In 2003 Acas received 4,386 applications to employment tribunals relating to redundancy pay and 103 requests to help settle large scale disputes.

Acas' other online learning packages - on Discipline and Grievances at work, including the new three-step-procedure, and Information and Consultation - have attracted almost 5,000 users in the last two months.

"Acas believes that prevention is better than cure, which is why our good practice guidance helps thousands of businesses stay out of employment tribunals each year," said John Taylor, Acas Chief Executive. "Our good practice guidance helps employers keep up to date with employment law and have the right procedures in place to deal with problems promptly.

"This online learning package will help employers develop appropriate polices and procedures to get it right. Using Acas' good practice will help stop problems developing in the first place."
