ICI has been working with Thomson NETg since 1998 and is now more than doubling the number of online courses available to its employees in 55 countries. "ICI is committed to providing all its employees with an equal opportunity to develop to their full potential which is why we have embraced e-Learning worldwide," commented Steve Gunn, Senior Communications Manager at National Starch & Chemical (an ICI Group company). Learning resources are accessed through ICI’s 'Learning Zone' which is hosted on the web by Thomson NETg and is accessible from employees’ home PCs as well as those in the office. The Learning Zone provides a gateway to 100 of Thomson NETg's IT desktop courses and more than 350 business and professional skills courses. The courses available include leadership, project management, strategic planning, team-building, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and can be accessed in 10 languages such as English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Korean. Through ICI’s 'Friends and Family' service, up to three family members of each employee can be given home access to 50 selected courses which include Microsoft Office courses, time management and digital photography skills. ICI have established a competency framework which is based on a number of Success Factors. These describe the personal characteristics, behaviours and skills that ICI has identified as indicators of outstanding individual performance likely to lead to improved business results. Each of the Thomson NETg courses is listed according to the Success Factor that it fulfils, helping ICI to develop each person's skills in line with their job requirements. ICI is also implementing Thomson NETg's Search Now which is designed to enable learners to type in a training query and receive an instant learning activity. "We wanted to facilitate on demand learning which is why we have implemented Thomson NETg's Search Now," said Gunn. "The solution will ensure that learning is timely and relevant and that employees have the skills they need to perform their roles smartly and efficiently." Thomson NETg's e-learning is used alongside other forms of training at ICI that range from books to videos to instructor-led training. Many of the e-learning courses form part of mandatory training that is undertaken by employees before carrying out instructor-led training. This is designed to bring learners up to the same standard before entering the classroom. ICI has been using Thomson NETg's learning since 1998 and since then usage has steadily progressed - in November 2004, ICI recorded 4000 registered users. The current number of users stands at more than 4,700 and ICI say this figure is steadily increasing.
