BeLA's objective is to develop and promote Brighton as the 'European centre of excellence for e-learning'. The alliance was set up and is managed by Wired Sussex, the business development and networking agency for companies operating within the digital, media and technology sectors in Sussex. Nick Underhill, Director of Wired Sussex, said: "The city has an excellent track record in e-learning, and local companies have won a number of awards for their work with government and corporate clients. The e-learning development industry is worth more than £50 million per annum to Brighton and Hove', making its significance within the local community that much higher." Graham Sherry, Managing Director of Driven Systems commented: "We are very pleased to have been accepted as founding members of BeLA and thank all our colleagues in BeLA that have welcomed us. We look forward to playing a strong role in support of the strategic aims and shared vision of excellence and continued professionalism in Brighton, and are certainly not short of ideas. "At Driven Systems we certainly recognise the advantage of operating in the city of Brighton & Hove, such is the rich array of talent and skills in Brighton's e-learning community. Brighton is a live hotbed of creative design and professional commercial approaches, providing very fertile ground for enterprises and individuals looking to take strides up the ladder of innovation and creativity in the learning space. "As a diverse network and industry 'think tank', we have been highly impressed by the speed of progress of BeLA and the openness of debate between member organisations. We are in no doubt that BeLA is the right choice to unite the Brighton & Hove business community towards driving the UK forward as a centre for e-learning, not just in UK and Europe, but globally." BeLA is sponsored by its founding members, which include Academy Internet, Brightwave, Cognitive Applications, Digitalbrain, Epic, Futuremedia, Imparo, KnowledgePool eLearning, Worth Media and Driven Systems. Jason Woodford, a Development Director at Academy Internet, one of BeLA's existing founding members, added: "Academy Internet recommended Driven Systems for BeLA membership in recognition of the importance of QA and Testing in the e-learning development process and Driven Systems' clear interest in that discipline. Driven Systems knowledge and expertise will be a welcome contribution to BeLA's mission." BeLA’s supporting partners include Brighton and Hove Council, City College, South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), Sussex Learning and Skills, University of Brighton and the University of Sussex.
