Acas helps launch training DVD on employment tribunals

Acas has helped to launch a new DVD which aims to guide employers and individuals through the employment tribunal process.

The Essential Guide to Employment Tribunals, produced by legal firm Capital Law and Channel Television, in association with Acas, is the first training DVD in which Acas has participated.

Acas Chief Executive John Taylor said: "Our primary concern is to help avoid tribunal cases if at all possible. My advice would be "Don't even go there" if there is another way to solve your individual workplace dispute fairly and amicably. The cost, stress and disruption to lives and business can be huge. People often don't think about this - or underestimate the consequences - before they decide to go ahead.

"Acas helps to settle three quarters of Britain's individual workplace disputes before they get to a tribunal hearing. I would therefore urge anyone involved to talk to us first before going any further with their claim.

"Having the correct procedures and practices in place will help organisations avoid employment relations difficulties. Of course, there will always be occasions where people just can't find common ground - and even the best-run organisations may become involved in a tribunal case. If a case does go all the way, then everyone involved needs to be properly prepared.

"I was therefore delighted to be asked to introduce this DVD and contribute Acas' knowledge and experience. The advice throughout is sensible and unbiased - and I think most people will find it an excellent learning tool. We want to make sure that everyone who sees this DVD considers Acas as their first stop."'

Chris Nott of Capital Law added: "'We have produced the DVD because we know from our own extensive experience that everyone who is - or might - be involved in a tribunal hearing would benefit from a clear understanding of how the process works. They also need to be aware of the options available to them before getting to the hearing stage. There is something here for everyone, from employers and individuals to HR advisers and the legal profession."

David Evans of Channel Television concluded: "As an ITV broadcaster we have produced a high-quality DVD, as user-friendly as possible. Information is grouped in easy-to-access chapters providing a practical common-sense approach to subject learning."
