The 11 members may not have been footballers or national icons, but like all teams they put their success down to hard work and training. Team 'learndirect 2 million' was made up of a national complement of learndirect learners - one from each English region, one from Wales and one from Northern Ireland. They represented the two million people who, over the last five years, have taken courses with e-learning provider learndirect. Between them they've used computers at home, at work or at their local learndirect centre to complete courses in literacy, numeracy, IT, and business and management. The team were invited to a celebration held in London to mark the milestone. Speaking at the event, skills minister Phil Hope said: "This Government is making learning more easily available to individuals and businesses alike. "We set up Ufi to improve the nation's competitiveness and it's making a massive contribution to our skills agenda. "Through the learndirect helpline and on-line learning, delivered through a network of centres across the country, we are reaching people from every background and region and making a difference to their lives. "We all need good skills at home and in the workplace. learndirect is the largest state supported e-learning initiative in the world, and it's helping literally millions of adults develop their potential and reach their personal goals." Also attending the event was Sarah Jones, chief executive at Ufi, the company behind learndirect. She added: "Two million people would fill the World Cup final stadium 30 times - that's a lot of learners, and a lot of learning. "We wanted not just to mark the fact learndirect has reached so many people, but actually celebrate their individual achievements, and the progress they've made since taking their first learndirect course. With learndirect they don't think it's all over - for many of our learners it's just the beginning."
