Trustee e-learning programme launched

An e-learning programme that aims to help trustees in voluntary organisations to improve their skills has been launched by the Governance Hub in partnership with SAVO (Suffolk Association of Voluntary Organisations).

Research from the Governance Hub found that although most trustees volunteer because they want to give something back to society and contribute to a good cause, only 6% felt that trustees usually have the skills needed for board membership.

In addition, the research found that 42% of trustees are given no opportunity to learn about their role and have little support or help in managing complex budgets, employing people or running services.

Jolanta Lasota, head of the Governance Hub, said: "Good governance is essential for the health and success of any organisation. Our research suggests that very few trustees feel that they are fully equipped for their role.

"As a solution, SAVO in partnership with the Governance Hub has developed a new e-learning programme, Learning to Drive. We are encouraging trustees to take advantage of this resource, to help prepare themselves for their role as trustees."

Learning to Drive outlines the roles and responsibilities of trusteeship and how people can develop their skills and knowledge further. It also covers the main principles within the National Occupational Standards for Trustees and Management Committee Members and the Code of Governance.

Jonathan Moore, chief executive of SAVO, said: "The reaction to Learning to Drive has been very positive. It is overwhelmingly viewed as a friendly guide to help Trustees face many difficult and challenging tasks

"The course gets essential information to Trustees - the vast majority of whom have to learn their role as they go along. E-learning provides a dynamic and very accessible response to this fairly unique role."

Trustees and committee members can register by logging on at www.trustee-elearning.org.uk
