World of Learning 2004

The World of Learning 2004 conference and exhibition will be taking place at the NEC, Birmingham on 17th & 18th November. Aimed at training, personnel and HR professionals, this years event will include:

  • A conference programme featuring leading international speakers and case studies
  • Free interactive workshops, product demonstrations and an advice clinic
  • Over 80 exhibitors showcasing their latest products and solutions
  • The World of Learning Awards 2004 gala evening, hosted by comedian Sean Lock

The event covers a wide range of training, learning and development solutions from instructor-led training, blended solutions, training venues and distance learning to e-learning, management development, training software and HR/training management systems.

The programme of experimental workshops and product demonstrations provide visitors with the opportunity to see, hear and sample the latest training solutions with presentations including Hyperwave, Mary Gober International and ebc.

A principle feature of the event is the conference, which focuses on the key strategic issues facing training professionals, as well as the practicalities of implementing integrated solutions, with a wide range of case studies to demonstrate ideas in practice.

In addition, the World of Learning Awards, which reward and recognise the highest standards of achievement within the training industry, will be presented during a black-tie gala evening on 17 November 2004 hosted by comedian Sean Lock.

Conference

Leading industry speakers have been lined up to provide an insight into the latest trends in business learning and development at the World of Learning Conference 2004.

"The World of Learning Conference addresses the most important learning and development issues facing businesses today", said Alison Church, Senior Conference Producer at World of Learning 2004. "For example, research has shown that training departments continually have to meet the challenge of proving the business benefits of people development and how it transfers back to the workplace - these are just two of the key topics being focused on at the event."

The conference programme covers a wealth of learning issues including:

  • Securing staff buy-in to training
  • Establishing a true blended solution
  • Developing an effective learning and development function
  • How to improve soft skills through drama-based training
  • Constructing a learning culture
  • Developing managers and leaders

Dr Dean Spitzer, Managing Consultant - Learning & Performance, IBM Corporation USA, will consider how organisations can gain competitive edge through investing in people development.

• Free Keynote Address: 18 November 2004

How can you demonstrate correlations between skills investment and company performance?

Jane Massy, Workplace Training and Performance Consultant and leading industry analyst, will discuss global developments in measuring return on investment, identifying how benchmarking techniques are changing, and how to ensure that the right measurement methodologies are employed.

Clive Shepherd, Director of e-Learning at The Training Foundation, will share his expertise on the role of e-learning within the context of blended solutions and considering questions such as 'can e-learning really stand alone?' and 'does e-learning suit all learners?'

• Free Event Closing Keynote: 18 November

Susan Pember, Director of the Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit at the Department for Education and Skills closes the event with an outline of the government's action on improving basic skill levels in the UK.

Visit Ashridge on stand E110 for a demonstration of the Ashridge Virtual Learning Resource Centre (VLRC) and to learn about their new initiatives. The VLRC is an e-learning product designed, at its inception, as a website of resources to support Ashridge’s course participants. Over the last five years it has grown beyond its initial brief and now has over fifty Learning Guides – management and business tools, written by Ashridge faculty and consultants; a range of third party material including the popular Management Pocketbook series in pdf format and a Thomson Gale database of over 200 business journals online.

Atlantic link are launching two e-learning productivity tools: the latest version of Content Point and a screen capture system called Capture Point. Content Point V2.2 features a PowerPoint Converter which can quickly convert your PowerPoint presentations into Flash based e-Learning. The product also allows you to convert PowerPoint based training materials into dynamic websites and features a Course Creation Wizard.

BBC Worldwide

BBC Worldwide are showcasing three new products: Management Essentials, 50 Lessons, and Disability Equality in Recruitment and Corporate Social Responsibility.

Management Essentials, which uses clips from classic British BBC comedies The Fast Show, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, the Brittas Empire and Are You Being Served, is designed to help improve the skills of UK managers. The programme has been nominated for the World of Learning Generic Solution of the Year award.

Management Essentials focuses on four key areas of management and contains all the materials required to study for a Level 4 introductory diploma in management, in a 45-hour course. Each of the 4 modules contains a variety of study methodologies including multi-media, online activity, video content, text based study materials and offline activity such as reading and activities within the workplace.

Visitors to the BBC Worldwide stand will also be able to preview Fifty Lessons - a brand new senior management learning tool, focused on the sharing of business knowledge by recognised industry leaders.

The content is delivered as short video segments, each around three to five minutes long. The experiences contained in each programme are designed to illustrate, inspire, educate or simply entice. The lessons are delivered in digital format straight to the desktop, at home or work, with each lesson supported by printable PDF “lesson cards” offering a full overview and background details for each lesson.

BDP Media

BDP Media are launching Challenging Behaviour, a learning resource to help staff and managers respond appropriately to bullying and harassment.

British Computer Society

The British Computer Society are showcasing their new e-Citizen qualification.

CIA Training
Stand D80

CIA Training are launching courseware for the British Computer Society’s e-Citizen qualification.

Cylix

e-Learning developer Cylix will be demonstrating an online programme that supports the ILM Level 2 Introductory Certificate in Team Leading.

Developed for Ufi and fully endorsed by ILM, the programme comprises over 10 hours of e-learning on topics ranging from problem solving to motivation. Further offline activities in the form of Action Plans encourage learners to outline how they intend to apply their newfound knowledge to their workplace.

The programme will be available through learndirect’s national network of learning centres from December 2004 and will include an online assessment which learners can take in order to achieve the qualification.

According to the company the product features an innovative web tool which provides four pathways through the training content, each constructed from templates reflecting one of four main learning styles.

“With Paths4Learning we've tried to look at e-learning in a fresh way,” said Tony Bradley, Development Director for Forward Vision. “Most products start with the needs of organisations and map these for learners. We looked through the other end of the telescope and asked, 'what do learners want that will motivate them to learn?
