QCA chief executive joins speaker line-up at ALP annual conference

Dr Ken Boston, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority’s chief executive, will discuss the proposed reforms of vocational qualifications in the light of the recent 14-19 education white paper when he addresses the third annual conference of the Association of Learning Providers next month in Birmingham.

He joins a line-up of speakers which the ALP expects will include senior ministers once a new government has been appointed. The list of those addressing the conference includes:

  • Sir Geoffrey Holland – Chair, Learning & Skills Development Agency
  • Martin Dunford – Chairman, Association of Learning Providers
  • Patricia Richards – Chief Executive, Automotive Skills
  • David Way – Director of Skills, Learning and Skills Council
  • David Hunter – Chief Executive, Lifelong Learning Sector Skills Council
  • Peter Lauener – Director for Qualifications and Young People, DfES

Topics under discussion will include:

  • Basic skills
  • Entry to Employment and Apprenticeships within the context of the national skills strategy
  • Integrating vocational qualifications into the academic timetable
  • Improving quality in learning provision
  • The proposed National Employer Training Programme and Building on the New Deal
  • The funding of training by government, employers and learners
  • 14-19 education and training reforms

Graham Hoyle, ALP’s chief executive, said: "The recent 14-19 education white paper and the skills white paper provide a greater focus towards achieving a post-16 education and training framework which is led by demands of employers and learners. And the recent announcement that an additional £38 million of funding is being directed towards the increasing demand for apprenticeships provides firm evidence that we are moving in the right direction.

"The Partners in Learning conference and exhibition will offer an excellent opportunity to do a stock-take on progress and identify how independent and other work based learning providers can make an even greater contribution to improving the skills of young people, the adult workforce and the unemployed."

The Association of Learning Providers is a trade association for work based learning providers in Britain. The majority of its 398 members are private, not-for-profit and voluntary sector training organisations.

The Partners in Learning Conference & Exhibition takes place on Wednesday 11th May and Thursday 12th May 2005 at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.
