'Closing the skills gap' in the financial services sector

The Financial Services Skills Council (FSSC) and the Alliance for Finance are to co-host 'Closing the skills gap', a one-day conference on 3 May 2006 that will look at the role played by the trade unions in developing the skills and knowledge of people working in the financial services industry.

Skills minister Phil Hope, TUC Deputy general secretary Frances O'Grady and FSSC chief executive Teresa Sayers are expected to be on the platform, alongside industry figures such as Stephen Sklaroff of the Association of British Insurers, Stuart Bernau of Nationwide and Mike Hampton of Friends Provident.

The organisers say the central theme of the day will be the importance of a collaborative approach between employers, unions and their Union Learning Reps in putting skills at the top of the agenda in workplaces across the UK.

The Alliance for Finance is an umbrella organisation for trade unions and staff associations in the finance sector. The Alliance and the FSSC have recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding which sets out the commitment of both organisations to work together to tackle the skills issues in the industry.

John Earls, research section head at Amicus and FSSC Board member, said: "The Skills Council and the Alliance for Finance are keen to explore avenues of employee development that promote the retention of skills, create opportunities for upskilling and provide cost-effective solutions to external recruitment for employers.

"We see this conference acting as a springboard for a whole host of joint initiatives during the coming months and years."

The full-day conference will take place on Wednesday 3 May 2006 at Congress House, Great Russell Street, London.
