Unionlearn Director Liz Smith also addressed the conference and spoke about developing trade union learning in workplaces. Sue Townsend said: "I left school at fourteen without any qualifications. My education began again when I was an adult and took some evening classes. Later I did a part-time Youth and Community work course. At the same time I was working and looked after my three little kids. This adult learning, together with reading a wide range of books helped me to have the confidence to achieve my impossible dream - to be a writer. Union Learning Reps are there to help you find the best in yourself. It's never to late to learn." Gillian Merron said: "Speaking to Union Learning Reps from the East Midlands has been a real pleasure and an education for me as I am very impressed by all their hard work. "It's clear that they are doing a great job in the region, working with unions, employers and their colleagues to create a culture of learning which is making a real difference for individuals and their places of work." Mary Alys, regional manager of Unionlearn with the Midlands TUC, said: "Our second Unionlearn annual conference here in Coventry is a wonderful occasion to celebrate the successes of union-led learning in the Midlands. "Throughout the region Union Learning Reps are working hard to improve skills levels in the region, which suffers the highest level of people with no qualifications. I am delighted to welcome Sue Townsend to address the conference, as she is always a fantastic hit with our ULRs and a great promoter of learning."
