Sanderson and Clarke to begin search for new Chairman of the Learning and Skills Council

The search for a new Chairman of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) was announced today by Charles Clarke, Education and Skills Secretary, and Bryan Sanderson, Chairman of the LSC.

Bryan Sanderson said: "This summer my term as Chairman of the Learning and Skills Council comes to an end. Over the next six months I will continue to be actively involved in LSC business. However, the time is right for us to begin the search for my successor, to ensure our momentum is not lost.

"I am exceptionally proud of what we have achieved during the four-year term of my Chairmanship. My thanks are due to many people, in particular LSC staff, national Council and committee members and local chairs, for their support, energy and dedication. We have helped to lay the foundation stones for the LSC and its vital work for the education of our people; young and old."

Bryan Sanderson has worked for the Learning and Skills Council since 2000. He is also the Chairman of BUPA and Chairman designate of the Standard Chartered Bank.

Education and Skills Secretary Charles Clarke commented: "Bryan has been a central figure in the establishment of the Learning and Skills Council over the last four years. The growing success of the LSC in delivering its wide-ranging remit is a tribute to his hard work. As the first Chairman he has made the LSC the country's lead agency for the delivery of our vital learning and skills agenda. With his wealth of business experience and strategic vision, Bryan has helped to build strong partnerships across the learning and skills sector and with employers. His successor will be able to build on his well laid foundations."

Adverts will be placed in the national press in early February by the Department for Education and Skills.
