The final apointee is Mr Ian Cumming - Chief Executive, Morecambe Bay Hospitals NHS Trust. Mr Cumming has a clinical laboratory background with 20 years NHS experience and over 8 years experience as Chief Executive of an acute NHS Trust. The Board, which first met in October 2003, comprises 25 members - 16 medical and 9 lay (including the Chair), of whom 6 are taken from a list provided by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and 1 from a list provided by the General Medical Council. Secretary of State for England appointed 19 members (including the first Chair) and the administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland appoint one medical and one lay member each last year. However, it was felt necessary to have a serving NHS Trust Chief Executive on the Board in order to reflect current NHS issues. The Board is a key part of the drive to improve standards and assure the quality of postgraduate medical education and training for the modern NHS, in which work in multi- disciplinary teams and the patient experience are increasingly important considerations. It brings together responsibility for all postgraduate medical education. The Board will be responsible for creating a new, flexible system that is responsive to the requirements of users and providers of health services in a modern NHS.
