BT and WebEx launch new web conferencing service

WebEx Communications Inc. and BT have joined forces to launch a new web conferencing service designed specifically for the European market.

The new service combines BT's teleconferencing service with the data, voice and video web communications capabilities of the WebEx MediaTone Network to create a comprehensive, multilingual web meeting service. No additional software or hardware is required, customers just need a phone and a Web browser to host or participate in a Web meeting.

BT's new service will be called "BT Meeting Centre, powered by WebEx". Customers will be able to access the service from BT MeetMe and BT's reservation-based teleconference service to easily escalate an audio-only conference call into a collaborative, interactive working meeting.

"By combining data, voice and video in a web meeting, BT Meeting Centre effectively recreates the productivity and interactivity of an in-person meeting," said Nigel Stagg, director, BT Conferencing. "It enables our customers to save time and reduce travel costs while improving communications and meeting more frequently. The performance and scalability of the WebEx MediaTone Network was central to our decision to team with WebEx. This quality assurance is essential for our corporate customers."

Tony Gasson, vice president EMEA at WebEx said: "Through this strategic relationship with BT we will be able to take the productivity and cost benefits of online meetings to the large European market. The BT Meeting Centre service helps businesses expand their marketing and accelerate the sales cycle by qualifying leads and demonstrating products and services online. BT Conferencing is an ideal partner for WebEx, as it is the leading conferencing provider in Europe with a broad spectrum of blue chip corporate clients and a large SME base."

WebEx manages a global network over which it delivers a range of web communications services including services for web conferencing, web-based support, remote training and online events.

BT Meeting Centre will be sold on a pay-as-you-go basis so customers will be able to control costs and host Web meetings instantaneously. BT will also offer set-up, training and ongoing customer support as part of the service.
