Hewitt announces new appointment to head Automotive Academy

Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Patricia Hewitt, has announced that Joe Greenwell, Chairman and Chief Executive of Jaguar and Land Rover, has been appointed as the first Chairman to head Britain's unique Automotive Academy.

The Automotive Academy is a partnership between Government, the automotive industry, and the education sector to give employees access to training designed to reflect the needs of vehicle builders and component manufacturers.

Announcing Joe Greenwell's appointment, Patricia Hewitt, said: "The Automotive Academy has made incredible progress in a very short time. A lot of the important groundwork has already been carried out such as the establishment of two new pilot courses for team leaders and senior managers. With such a respected industry figure as Joe Greenwell as Chairman, I know that this vital initiative will make an even bigger impact on the training needs of the automotive sector."

Joe Greenwell added: "It's an honour to be appointed to this very important role. Having worked in the industry and been responsible for markets throughout the world, I have been able to see first hand just how vital training is to our industry. I see my role as ensuring that Britain's automotive industry and everyone in it has access to training that is world-leading in quality and directly relevant to the industry."

Joe Greenwell has worked in the automotive business both in Britain and the USA. He was appointed Chairman and CEO of Jaguar and Land Rover in October 2003 and is a Vice President of the Ford Motor Company. Previously he was Vice President, Marketing and Operations for Ford, based at their world-headquarters in Michigan where he was also responsible for Ford of Mexico, Ford of Canada and Worldwide Direct Market Operations and Global Marketing.

The Academy has its headquarters 'hub' in Birmingham and will eventually operate through a network of regional 'spokes' the first of which, Skills4Auto, is already launched and covers the Midlands.
