Leadership Trust welcomes John Smith Fellows

Ross-on-Wye based leadership development organisation, The Leadership Trust, was host recently to 21 Fellows of the John Smith Fellowship Programme. The Fellows came from several of the new republics in the former Soviet Union including Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia and the Ukraine. They were joined during their time here by the Trustees of the John Smith Memorial Trust including Baroness Smith of Gilmorehill and The Rt Hon The Lord John McCluskey (Chairman) and other specially invited guests.

The John Smith Memorial Trust is an all-party, UK charity established to strengthen and deepen democracy through the next generation of leaders in the former Soviet Union. Aimed at young people of proven ability in key leadership positions such as leading politicians, administrators and leaders in civil society, the Fellowship invites 20 Fellows each year to the UK for an intensive good-governance programme. Former Fellows include George Ugulava, who went on to be Deputy Justice Minister in the new Georgian administration.

The Fellows were at The Leadership Trust for their ‘weekend retreat', which falls mid-way into their six-week stay in the UK. The focus for the weekend was "Media Regulation and Freedom." Speakers included John Newbigin, Head of Corporate Relations at Channel 4, who covered "UK & Media - The Culture of Public Service," and Lord Dubs of Battersea, Chairman of the Broadcasting Standards Commission, who raised the question of "Broadcasting Standards." Day two continued on the same theme with a Question Time Panel discussing "The Relationship Between Media and Government" chaired by Special Correspondent for BBC News, Fergal Keane.

The Leadership Trust donated the use of its full facilities over the residential weekend, including their 130 seat lecture theatre, to the Fellowship Programme. Paul K Winter, Chief Executive at The Trust said: "We are delighted to support the John Smith Fellowship Programme and its aims and objectives. Welcoming the Fellows back to The Leadership Trust for the ‘Weekend Retreat' gave us the opportunity to introduce these important individuals from the ex-USSR States to the background and philosophies of The Leadership Trust."

The Leadership Trust Foundation is an educational charitable trust, dedicated to the enhancement and development of leadership skills in all sectors of society. It is looking forward to offering its hospitality to another group of Fellows in 2005.
