New appointments at Sector Skills Councils

SummitSkills appoints PR and Communications Manager

SummitSkills, the Sector Skills Council for the building services engineering sector, has appointed Kate Wilson as PR and communications manager.

Her role will include the implementation of the organisation's communications strategy and the establishment of effective working relationships with key individuals and organisations from industry, education and Government.

Wilson will also be creating marketing initiatives to promote the importance of training to employers in the sector, as well as increasing awareness of building services engineering among education and careers professionals.

"I am delighted to be working with the team at SummitSkills and look forward to raising the organisation's profile among all audiences affected by sector recruitment and training," said Wilson.

Keith Marshall, chief executive, SummitSkills said: "By the end of September, there will be 21 in the SummitSkills' team covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Kate's appointment further strengthens our commitment to meeting the regional and national agendas of SummitSkills. We are delighted to welcome her aboard."

SEMTA appoints new Scottish Manager

SEMTA, the skills council for science and engineering, has appointed a new Scottish manager to replace Jim Steel who retired in April. He is Brian Humphrey, formerly accreditation manager at the Scottish Qualifications Authority, who takes up his new post at SEMTA's Glasgow office today.

Humphrey has been involved in vocational education and training since beginning his career as a careers adviser more than 20 years ago. He said: "SEMTA is one of the most important sector skills council and has been asked by the Government to help close the skills gap and productivity gap which exists between Scotland and some of our biggest international competitors.

"I am greatly looking forward to that challenge."

Before joining the SQA, Humphrey worked with Lanarkshire Development Agency, Lanarkshire Education Authority and Renfrewshire Enterprise.

GoSkills South West Business Adviser appointed

GoSkills, the Sector Skills Council in development for passenger transport, has announced the latest appointment to its team of regional business advisers. Janet Francis will be responsible for providing dedicated support to businesses in the South West Region on skills and learning issues.

Peter Huntington, GoSkills Chief Executive, said, "Janet's appointment adds one of the final pieces to our network of advisers that will ensure that businesses and operators, across the whole of the UK, will have access to GoSkills expertise. Passenger transport in the South West region is crucial to many people, creating a better trained and skilled workforce will play an essential part in providing a modern, customer focussed services. We need the sector's industries to engage with us to identify skills needs and help shape the qualifications and standards that affect their operations. We are currently in the process of establishing both regional and industry specific groups to debate the issues."

Francis has over ten years experience in skills, training and employability provision. She has worked as a Business Development Manager with a large training provider in the North West and as an Employment Development Manager with a customer service training provider to the national retail trade.

Commenting on the new role Francis said, "I have recently moved to the South West so it's a brand new experience in more ways than one. I will be making contact with as many employers and operators as possible and setting up a regional group is a top priority for me, I am also going to be leading on a national cross-sector issue, IT User. I am really looking forward to this new challenge. "
