The Haven ports of Felixstowe, Harwich, Ipswich and Mistley represent one of the UK's largest gateways. Based on their central role as hubs and generators of economic activity, the Haven Gateway Partnership provides a framework within which its partner organisations, from the private and public sectors, can work together to promote economic opportunities. The delegation was led by Richard Morton, project manager for the Haven Gateway Partnership's Maritime and Logistics Skills Centre. "The International Shipping and Transport College is internationally renowned for its excellence," said Mr Morton. "We visited the college to see what they do and how they do it. It was really to get an understanding of how the college is set up and what the partnerships are between college, government and employers to make sure they have the skills needed for the future." The Haven Gateway visitors were also able to view the college's wide range of simulators, from straddle carrier and ship to shore simulators to pilotage, bulk handling and transport chain simulators. Following the investigative visit and meetings, the Haven Gateway's education and skills group will discuss how to move forward to deliver the skills needed for the region's ports and general logistics industry, with the possibility of tapping into Rotterdam's expertise where appropriate. "We wanted to show the training providers and the potential new university for Suffolk the possibilities in logistics and transport - including the whole range, from leadership to practical delivery of qualifications," said Mr Morton. Among the delegation were representatives from: Learning and Skills Council for Suffolk; Learning and Skills Council for East of England; Suffolk College; Colchester Institute; Trinity House Lighthouse Service; Colne Community School; Hutchison Ports UK; and the Port of Felixstowe.
