Skills for Logistics highlight national skills needs

Skills for Logistics, the Sector Skills Council for the freight logistics industry, recently hosted Employer Skills Conventions in Wales and Scotland. The events were designed to identify nation specific and UK-wide skills and training needs of companies in the logistics sector.

Key issues identified in Wales and Scotland include:

  • The Working Time Directive and the impact of the 48 hour working week
  • Perceptions of the logistics industry
  • The importance of vocational training
  • Driver shortages
  • Lack of a recognisable career path for people looking to enter the industry

"As a representative of employers it is vital that we are truly reflecting the real issues that employers and the industry are facing," said Andrew Callaghan, Chairman, Skills for Logistics. "It is equally important that the employers are able to use us as a channel to communicate with Government and Public Sector organisations in order to ensure that their training and skills needs are met."

The two events were attended by employers representing a number of different sub-sectors and business sizes within the logistics industry. These included SMEs and major corporations across a variety of supply chains including Food and Drink, Construction, Paper & Printing and Utilities. Representatives from 3663, RMC, Christian Salvesen, United Freight Distribution, DHL and Menzies Distribution all contributed to the discussions.

Senior company representatives were also offered the chance to become a member of the Skills for Logistics Welsh and Scottish Employer Panels. The panels will advise the executive board on issues that will effect the planning and delivery of skills development and education in both Wales and Scotland.
