Communications are key to successful measurement solutions, says survey

Internal communications is cited as a critical success factor in developing measurement solutions, following a survey of learning analytics programme managers.

Over the last two months Global Learning Alliance and Knowledge Advisors have surveyed learning analytics programme managers from over 50 organsiations to produce a report about managing the change when introducing a learning analytics solution.

"A successful learning analytics program relies on the ability to make changes," said Global Learning Alliance's Alison Parkinson. "An area where organisations are making dramatic changes is in how they measure the impact of their learning investments. No longer are smile sheets at the end of class the norm. Organisations are linking training to business results, conducting deeper analysis, sending supervisor and on-the-job surveys, and calculating financial returns. All of these changes need to be managed appropriately for maximum benefit."

The 30 page report, 'Learning Analytics Change Management,' covers planning change, communications and optimising change. Key findings included:

- Most organisations gained support for learning analytics by presenting quantifiable and tangible benefits

- There were several strategies that have been successful in overcoming barriers to change. These include a continued emphasis on the benefits to change, piloting the change before the full rollout, and getting those affected by the change involved early on in the process.

- Early involvement of those affected, visible management support, and allowing feedback by those affected are the most critical factors in successfully initiating a learning analytics change within an organisation.

- Communications and people skills are the most critical characteristics of a successful change leader. Project management skills along with measurement/analytics skills are also important factors as well.
