The NHS Institute for Learning, Skills and Innovation was created from the merger of the NHS Modernisation Agency, the NHS Leadership Centre, NHSU and the proposed new National Innovation Centre. In his new role, Professor Fryer will act as a learning champion, aiming to broaden participation in learning for existing NHS staff as well as amongst people seeking to take up professional careers in health and social care. "The Department is committed to maximising the learning and development potential of all staff, and particularly in engaging more staff from groups currently under-represented in the NHS," said John Hutton. "That means implementing the concept of the skills escalator, creating a health service where everyone is allowed to learn, develop and progress to the best of their potential. "I'm delighted to announce that Bob will take up this new post. He has made an invaluable contribution to the work of the NHSU and I'm sure that he will have an equally similar impact in his new role." Professor Fryer will take up his position in January 2005.
