British Learning Association to quality assure UK Online Centres

The British Learning Association (BLA) has been contracted by Ufi to establish a quality assessment and award scheme in UK Online centres.

UK Online centres were created to provide access to computers and the Internet to help people of all ages develop computer skills. Centres have been established in locations ranging from internet cafés and public libraries, to community centres and village halls. Trained staff and volunteers are on hand at the centres to give advice and support.

Following a pilot project to test the applicability of the BLA Quality Mark as suitable indicators for determining the quality of the provision and activities taking place in UK Online centres, the BLA have been invited to implement a 'test phase' at 12 UK Online centres. The aim of the test phase is to achieve a fully operational system of quality assessment and development planning, resulting in an award that could potentially be rolled out to all centres.

Commenting on the partnership between the BLA and UK Online, Brian Merison, General Manager of the BLA said, "We are delighted that the substantial work carried out by the BLA on quality issues in the provision of learning is proving valuable to UK Online centres. UK Online is an important national initiative and the BLA is extremely pleased to support its further development.

"Work has begun on further testing of the process in 12 centres that reflect the breadth and diversity of UK Online provision. The aim is to have a fully operational system by the summer."

The BLA say that centres that satisfy all the requirements of the process will be entitled to recognition of this achievement through a category of the BLA Quality Mark.
